The Russians claimed all or most acres between Elliott Bay on the shoreline northward to Point Defiance (now Yakima) beyond which they assigned certain degrees or leagues (or miles)of latitude for Native Use according to Treaty #4 dated October 12th 1800 between Russia & Great Britain.[2] Although no specific boundary was set forth as far as property extending into Oregon or Idaho,[3] Macdonald thought that such claims would be more easily resolved if evidence could be found establishing that Russian activity extended into those territories - something which never came about because no significant discoveries were made near these areas during his rule as premier – let alone any formal settlement occurred despite efforts by both sides following his death in 1865 without leaving behind any clear instructions about how such claims should be pursued subsequent to his death or successors'.
