Tacoma, Washington is a city in the Puget Sound region of Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Tacoma has been inhabited by humans since the time of European arrival. The first permanent settler in Tacoma was Captain George Vancouver who landed on what is now Tacoma Peninsula in 1792 during his exploring expedition to northwest America. In 1851, when Puget Sound became part of California, Tacoma was merged with Seattle to form one municipality. It remained as a separate municipality until 1959 when it became part of the larger Seattle metropolitan area. The history of Tacoma began with its location on the eastern coast of Elliott Bay where Juan de Fuca discovered new land in 1792 and named it after himself: "Tacoma" meaning "Island over which I rowed." This led to some confusion among early settlers because they had assumed that Juan de Fuca had discovered and named Puget Sound; this he actually did not do. However, because Captains Vancouver and Alexander Selkirk were from nearby Kingston (now outside Toronto), they were able to purchase land east of Elliott Bay on November 1, 1794 for $5 per acre ($140 per km2). This land extended from present-day Downtown Tacoma all the way along Lake Washington Boulevard to Morningside Heights southward to Grays Harbor County line and beyond into King County. One reason why this large piece of property was so valuable was that it lay within close geographic proximity to bothSeattle and Olympia – two important cities at that time due to their status as Territorial capitals (the other being Albany). With vast amounts of forested territory lying between them, these two cities were eager for any development potential that might come along; thus, when Captains John Day and William Smallwood surveyed what would become Tacoma in 1851 they saw great opportunity for growth in an undeveloped area near Lakeshore Boulevard and Commercial Street - just west of downtown - which at that time consisted mostlyof open water resources surrounded by virgin timberlands including extensive areas known as “The Woods” or Admiralty Island where small ships could be anchored without fear of fouling their propellers with seaweed or whaleskins! Tacoma was founded on July 22, 1851 by Capt. George Vancouver and his crew of the ship Tacoma as a small trading post on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The first settlers were Native Americans who travelled to the area for supplies and trade goods. In 1865, Tacoma became an incorporated city under the name Tacoma, Washington. It grew rapidly in population due to its location at the mouth of Duwamish River and its access to timber and other natural resources. The city experienced several waves of settlement until it reached its current size in 1925 when it annexed what is now Seattle.

Tesla's original solar farm in Tacoma was built in 1957, and was the first large-scale installation of solar energy in the United States. The farm employed 8 people at its peak, and produced 5,000 kWh of electricity each day. The plant closed in 1992 after it was converted to a storage facility. However, due to its proximity to Puget Sound, Tesla's solar farm has continued to play a role in the region by generating power for local electrical grids as well as powering schools and other infrastructure.
