The town of Lakewood was platted in 1887 by A.P. Hill and Wm. H. Slagle as an agricultural community on the west side of the Arkansas River between what are now Erie Boulevard and I-25 south of downtown Denver. The name "Lakewood" was chosen because it sounded like a clear water body which would make for a good place to camp during summertime when nearby mountains were unavailable or too rocky to cross without assistance from horses or wagons drawn by four- or six-horse teams; also, since it would not be easy to Ford Creek (the river's course) if one wanted to build permanent residences thereabouts due to its steep banks and deep ravines, people thought that its name might suggest that this locality had something special about it that would attract people who desired to settle here permanently rather than transiently overnight while they were on their way somewhere else? Despite having been established only for a matter of months before being annexed by neighboring Aurora in February 1888 (i.e., less than two years after its founding), Lakewood quickly became one of Aurora's most important cultural centers due to its location within walking distance of many major businesses and cultural attractions such as City Hall (then known as the Capitol Annex) and Park Playground (now called Civic Center Park). By 1895, when Aurora incorporated as a city, Lakewood had more residents than any other municipality in Douglas County save Auraria itself! Nowadays everything within easy drive offers some form government services such as police Dept., library system etc...and numerous shopping options!! To date Lakewood has seen significant economic development both locally and nationally resulting in increased property values (+$1 Billion+/- since 2000) – generating almost $160 million annually in economic activity statewide alone! Although home prices have remained relatively stable throughout this period (-2% YoY), overall family income (+$27M+) has grown considerably reflecting increasing job opportunities everywhere from eateries near station (~50 restaurants currently open), medical offices (+10%), warehouse space (+8%) – even luxury homes (~3%) are finding increasing purchasers due to evergrowing affluence within our community!!! This rapid growth rate is directly attributable – at least partially – to our lackadaisical attitude towards infrastructure maintenance/upkeep combined with sheer volume attained across all levels OF OCCUPATION!!
