Lakewood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Denver metropolitan area. The CDP is named for Lakewood Naval Air Station which was located here before it moved to nearby Longmont in 1938. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native American hunters and gatherers who hunted game near the confluence of the South Platte and Clearwater Rivers. They built their villages along these rivers as they traveled between their hunting grounds and trade with other tribes. By 1800, however, most of these people had disappeared because of white exploration and settlement around this area. In 1869 Major George Atherton founded Fort Atherton on the east bank of the South Platte River opposite present-day Aurora. This fort served as an artillery post on both sides of the river for helping to protect settlers from Apache Indians during the Indian Wars era. In 1882 Captain John Denton established a trading post at what is now called Denton Rapids on either side of South Boulder Creek adjacent to present day Aurora. This post served as a caravanserai for goods transported overland from Denver through Rocky Mountain National Park across country to central Colorado towns such as Aspen, Telluride, Pueblo and Grand Junction before arriving in Fort Collins at Lewis & Clark's expedition terminus at Larimer Landing in 1804; thus began what became known as "the Great Overland Mail." Further westward traders arrived with fur trappers looking for new land to exploit during this time period including Jedediah Smith who explored this region in 1805 and1809 while also prospecting for gold nearlatched Golden Hill near today's Westminster; he found no significant quantities but did note waterfalls here that would later be developed into Clearwater Gulch Resort & Spa today’s Lakewood Estates neighborhood). In 1876 American Fur Company president James Hutton organized a group of Mormons led by Wm Henson to explore possible locations within Colorado for a fur farm; they choose Golden Hill due its favorable location overlooking both Cache Valley (northwest corner) and Mesa Verde (southwest corner).
