Fresno, California is a city in Fresno County, California. The population was 181,362 as of 2013. The area that would become Fresno was once part of the San Joaquin Valley and its history goes back to Rancho Cienega de Alisal. In 1851, Daniel Webster bought 1,000 acres south of the San Joaquin River from Antonio Lopez for $2 per acre. On October 16th, 1852 the town site was platted by George Sutter on land claimed by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1836. The name "Fresno" first appeared on a map published in 1868 by Edward Hurlbut with an incorrect spelling of "Fresno". It is generally accepted that the name comes from an event which took place on November 17th, 1868 when General Mariano Buena Vista ordered Pio Pico to march his army into Fresno and burn all the villages within fifty miles (80 km). After reaching Fresno they burned all but one village- Palo Alto which they left untouched because it had no military importance at the time. On December 15th General Mariano Buena Vista called off the assault after learning that most of the villagers were already safe in their homes. A small group of American soldiers under Captain John Gage burned down some buildings near downtown during this skirmish but nothing came of it as no one was hurt or captured.
